Okay, I get that this place is an institution, but I'm over it after rude treatment from a hostess this last time. We were asked how many we had in our party, then told to stand in a certain place, next to the longer line with larger parties. We did. Eventually we realized other parties of the same size, from far behind us in line, were being seated while we were still standing there. So we asked the hostess about this (very politely-it's not our style to be rude or demanding), and were told that we were actually supposed to stand in a different spot, then loop around and follow the line. Husband and I looked at each other- this wasn't what we'd been told, and even if it had been, when the hostess noticed we weren't standing in the right location (she'd walked past us several times, bringing up people from behind us in line to get seated), why not just tell us we were in the wrong place? And she gave us an attitude on top of it. I know the place is busy, but I really just don't need to spend my money if I'm going to get treated rudely and end up waiting forever for a table.

Sometimes you want a hearty breakfast for lunch, right? You can get that here fast, with a smile, and with loads of coffee. ;) My experience: I was just there today (weekday) and ordered the strawberry waffle and a side of scrambled eggs. I chose the glazed strawberries (between fresh or glazed) and requested egg whites for the side. After ordering, my food was on the table within five minutes. Everything was so good, that it's 10:00 PM and I'm still thinking about it. ;) The waffle was the best I've had in town and was smothered in delicious strawberries with whipped cream. Perfection! My server was incredibly nice and super conscientious; she was so attentive, I never had to ask for anything, and my coffee cup was always at least 75% full. More on the food: Other favorite menu items of mine include the pecan waffle, pancakes, oatmeal and the breakfast bowl (big bowl of berries, bananas, granola and yogurt). I really like that they have several different kinds of syrup on the table...that's just fun! If I were to be picky: If I had three wishes, I might change the following: (1) make the French toast from thick slices of challah or brioche, (2) extend their hours so they're open in the evenings (Sometimes I want breakfast for dinner too!), and (3) redecorate. The interior of the diner is somewhat drab, circa 1975; not the hip, chrome-accented designs of those lovely iconic American diners from the '50s. No juke boxes here, but plenty of wholesome dishes and fast and friendly service that will make everyone happy. Bonus wish: free-range eggs and at least some organic options for the so-called "dirty dozen." Anyhow, throw on your favorite baseball hat, or your hair up into half-pony, go relaxed, and tuck into some serious comfort food. I'm thinking about going back with the family this weekend. It's a great place for the kids with the large booths, paper place mats that double as coloring books, extensive menu, and diner environment (no one is there to pop the question, hiding the ring in the OJ, so your kids can be kids). 5 stars because I think it's the best in State College. (I no longer compare restaurants here to those in cities.) Come here for the comfort food and the excellent (i.e fast and friendly) service. You won't be disappointed! :) PS...They have a huge parking lot, so parking is a breeze. There is an ATM machine next to the cash resister, which helps with the less-than-ideal cash-only policy.

The Food: (Excellent) This is a landmark location in State College, PA, and the food says it all! The Original Waffle Shop is a champion of pancake and waffle platters, offers a great variety of syrups, and even goes outside of its specialty (i.e. waffles) to make some other extraordinary dishes (get the hash.....seriously). If you want to get your grub on for breakfast time, this is a top contender for the state of Pennsylvania! The Atmosphere: (Above Average) The Original Waffle Shop is essentially a glorified diner without any noticeable flaws. Seriously, the restaurant is mostly lit by natural sunlight with several more intimate areas, the carpeting and upholstery is very clean, and the noise level is just right. Even more importantly, you are surrounded by media that will leave you anticipating your meal! The walls have a variety of high-res images of the food served, and you can watch how your food is made while waiting for a seat via instructional videos. The Price: (Above Average) You can probably expect to pay approximately $10 - 20 per person. However, as the question is whether the price justifies the product and the answer is: CERTAINLY! If my family was visiting or I just a serious urge for proper breakfast food, I would take them here and proudly pay the price. The Service: (Excellent) One of the few places that I have ever been to where every employee seems genuinely motivated and focused on your experience. Our waitress was upbeat and witty, bus boy was a local high school student who held a conversation when prompted, and the even though the line was out the door, a efficient seating staff had us seated within 15 minutes.

It was not bad at all. I mean, for a gluten-free person don't expect to come here and get a waffle or anything. And depending on your sensitivity avoid it all together, but I didn't have a problem with their eggs and bacon situation when I came with friends after an event. Really reasonably priced, excellent service despite being crowded too. They have an ATM in-house since it's cash only.

Nothing much to say about the Waffle Shop that hasn't already been said. The food is great (particularly love the pecan waffles), but you couldn't pay me to go there past 10 a.m. on virtually any weekend since it gets way too crowded. I will say they do a remarkable job turning tables over, though, so even those scary looking lines move pretty quickly. One small beef...lack of credit cards is really a headache. I wish they'd change that.

Summary: A Penn State institution with a deservingly loyal fan base. Positive: 1) Traditional menu. 2) Friendly waiting staff. 3) Food is a perfect 10. 4) Prices are average to slightly less. 5) Portions are average to slightly more. Negative: 1) The line (depending on when you visit). 2) Seating feels slightly cramped. 2) They do NOT accept credit cards. The key to being immediately seated at the Original Waffle Shop is to arrive early. Depending on the location, season and event being held on campus, you will be rewarded with quick seating by the hostess. If you are one of the unfortunate many that miss this window, you will be subjugated to standing in line, which depending on if it is "game day", can extend out the doors and wrap halfway around the building. A result of their loyal customers, these lines are about as famous as their chocolate chip waffles. With lines that look similar to a cold war era Russian bread line, you know the food has got to be good. You don't earn the loyalty of patrons by not making good food. This location contains a large primary dining room, and one smaller dining area to the side. The dining area is carpeted, seating is "restaurant quality" (designed to be uncomfortable enough to prevent patrons from overstaying). Although the main dining area is large, there is a slight cramped feeling between seats. Artwork and plants are interspersed throughout. Although they are a chain, there is definitely a diner vibe here, something missing from modern "cookie-cutter" corporate owned restaurants. Food is reasonably priced. At times, items are lower than expected. Nothing is shockingly high, except for perhaps the Steak and Eggs but compared to other restaurants, this would be about average. The waiting staff is friendly, but busy. Sympathy is easily developed for them when you realize what they must go through on a Sunday at 11am. Menu selection is pretty traditional breakfast and lunch themed. Nothing odd or experimental being offered. The wait after your order is placed is average. Our last visit was 12 minutes between ordering and receiving. Quality of food is a perfect 10. I assume this is a result of following the mantra of "do things simply, do them well". Portions are between average and more than average, depending on what you order. No price shock when the check is received. The only thing I have a problem with is the Original Waffle Shop does not accept credit cards. There is though an ATM machine located near the register. I have not used it, so cannot say anything about the fee. As dependent as I am on paying with plastic, this is not a weekly (or monthly) visit for me. But judging by the length of the lines, I'm sure I won't be missed. Say to any out of state Penn State Alumni the words "Waffle Shop" and there will usually be a resulting smile, followed by a story of many visits (often times while hung over). The story usually ends with either "oh, I miss that place" or "when I'm there for the game, I usually stop by". Very few places have the privilege of that kind of loyalty.

Lines out the door for breakfast foods? Yes! Worth the wait, No! I get it, it is a Penn State tradition, a local business that everyone goes to as part of the State College experience. And then they go back to recall those experiences. And they take their friends and relatives there when they visit from out of town. The food is o.k. the standard basic breakfasts (and a few sandwiches and salads) done well enough to eat, but nothing exceptional. Not a bargain either, IMO overpriced for quality. If all you want is calories skip the lines and drink corn syrup. It is a major ingredient here. The service was bad. I fail to appreciate why having the customers pass down the flatware, and then pass the drinks and then pass the place-mats to their fellow table-mates is anything but annoying and lazy on the part of staff. And the delivery of drinking straws by tossing them in the air to see where they land on the table (or in the drinks, or on the patrons) is not cute or entertaining, but is asinine. NOTE the do not accept any form of payment but cash, there is an ATM inside. This place invites an tax audit, a health inspection, and customer service training overhaul - but hey, it is a tradition. The lines are still out the door!

Does this deserve a 5? yes!!! Did i care the line was out the door? NO! WHY??!! Because when we finally sat down our kind waitress took great care of us. We got our food in 10 minutes (or less, possibly less) and it was incredible! I am not a big breakfast eater. But damn that was some waffle. And they talk about their 'world famous' home fries. They were not lieing, the homefries were fantastic. We usually go to Denny's when we come to State College, but never again. We will never go anywhere else but this place!

Everything is great!! Seriously not a single minor annoyance. Food is the best breakfast food ever. Service is always fast and attentive. Ambience and decor are perfect . The ridiculously long lines move fast as The Waffle Shop puts out top shelf fresh breakfast food that is tasty effing yum yums at lightning speed. This is always a fantastic place to eat! Always great service!! Their omelettes are HUGE, and the Banana Nut Waffle is the best I've ever had. There are 2 reasons it does not get 5 stars 1) The hours: if you are a working person, you will rarely get to eat here because they close at 3 PM. 2) They do not take Debit/Credit cards. It's cash only. They DO have an ATM on site, but it's an extra 3$ fee to use. So if you want to eat here, get here early, and bring cash.

I had two eggs, they're pancakes and five sausage, worth a side of four bacon. Great stuff. But there was a surprise... My bottom cakes had pecans in it. Obviously an error. I didn't complain cause I liked it but somebody was obviously slacking in the kitchen. It's all cool tho.

My belgian waffle was a smidge too crispy but very good. The bacon was real bacon, not the thin, sad, anemic strips you might expect from a diner. The home fries are thinly sliced seasoned red potatoes rather than the frozen pour-out-of-a-bag kind. The coffee was really good and the server used her spidey-sense to detect when it was about a third full and topped it off quickly. Amazing. The line when we got there (at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon) was really long for parties of four, but you can skip the line if there are enough seats at the counter. My kids are happier at barstools than at tables, but I would only recommend this if they are relatively well-behaved because it seemed the counter was the favored spot for solo professor-types who want to sit away from the crowds and read the paper. I would probably go elsewhere if the line was out the door, but if not, the line moves quickly and the food is exceptionally good for the price. Cash only. ATM in the lobby.

Several weeks ago I had the Florentine Benedict which was made with spinach and tomatoes instead of the canadian bacon and I really enjoyed it and was hoping that they would add it to the menu. Well I found out that they have added the standard egg benedict and the florentine benedict even though they are not listed in the menu yet but are listed below the specials board. For $7.99 the dish comes with home fried potatoes and are very delicious.

The Original Waffle Shop is more aptly named The Original Anti-Atkins Shop. Your glycemic index will max out here, followed soon thereafter by an epic insulin crash. You will be left in a zombie-like trance, shuffling, drooling, unable to think or speak clearly, muttering things like "that was so worth the calories" and "brains...." as you cause nervousness in those around you. The pancakes and waffles here are a major score, and the bacon, egg, and cheese omlette is worth the statistical shortening of your life. The only real negative is the 40min wait to get in, queued up like cattle waiting to be slaughtered. It might be better during the week, but on weekends you will basically need a pre-breakfast to hold you over as you await the main event. However, that strange feeling from inside is your pancreas telling you not to go.

My husband is a huge waffle fan and pronounced these to be "righteous," so you can trust him. We sampled the regular Belgian and the pecan waffles, plus some bacon and a bowl of fruit. Everything was really good, and the sole element I found wanting was the lack of real maple syrup. I'd happily pay extra for it if it were offered. Service was quick and friendly. We went on a Sunday morning and had a short wait; even when the line is long, they turn tables fast. Oh yeah, cash only, too, but they have an ATM on site if you're lacking.

This is probably the most popular staple in State College and it gets talked up endlessly by alumni and students. I think the food here is definitely good, I can't really think of a much better place to get breakfast in the area. The problem is that it's a mecca for alumni and can be giant pain on the weekends. If the wait is out the door, I just come back another time. I usually go during the week - the specials are excellent and very cheap, and there's rarely a wait. To give an idea of price, during the week you can get the specials for between $3-5, during the weekend the meals are usually $5-9. The food is pretty standard - pancakes, bacon, potatoes, eggs - but they do standard breakfast really well. Cash only, ATM (with fees) on location, beware of going between 9-12 on weekends and forget about football weekends. Unless you're prepared to wait in a line that goes out the door and around the corner. As a couple other people pointed out, this is for the N. Atherton location, not the downtown one. Downtown is not run by the same people and is different (in a bad way). N. Atherton and Blue Course Dr. are the ones worth visiting - believe the townies, we know our waffle shops.

We ate here the morning after a PSU football game. It was crowded but that was to be expected. I'm not a "morning" person or a "breakfast" person, but my hubby wanted to eat here. Since I'm such a nice wife, I decided to give in. :) The food was good, nothing special but the service and atmosphere made it worth it. The bacon was pretty good, too.

Aside from the long wait in the cold, this place is definitely worth it. Make sure you have your entire party prior to seating, because you will not get in without the entire party! Food is delicious, well worth the long lines. I had the 2 eggs, pancakes and bacon and it was great. The bacon was thick sliced, very bad for you (but who is counting the calories at a place called waffle shop anyway). Go out and wait in line right now.

I've heard so much about this so called Waffle Shop. Now, I've had my fair share of waffles in my time, and nothing really made me think "WOW this is one damn good waffle." Waffle shop, on the other hand, is actually a spot that I'd consistently come back to. What makes these waffles so great? Well, the waffles of course! The spot itself is right on North Atherton. There's a decently sized parking lot in the back, but do make sure to get here early. The line does get pretty long, and it does have limited hours. Plus, it's cash only so make sure to stop by that ATM beforehand. This place has a good homey feel to it, without all that corporate cooke cutter diner look to it. The servers here are nice, and very attentive to your needs. As far as the food goes, there is quite the variety. In addition to waffles and pancakes, there are sandwiches and normal entrees, but c'mon. You and I both know that you're coming here for the waffles. I wasn't particular hungry this day, so I opted for the regular pancakes, egg, and sausage. The pancake was pretty awesome even though it wasn't infused with blueberries or chocolate chips. There was a very nice fluff to the pancake, and a nice hint of that buttery taste. I checked out the chocolate and blueberry ones and they actually do include whole blueberries and chocolate chips in their pancakes. None of that fake stuff here. Waffle Shop will treat you right. Now I know for a fact that I'll be back here again to try out the other flavors. Do yourself a favor and try this spot out.

If you're in State College just for a visit, you MUST stop in here. Don't be turned away by the long line you see waiting to get in, they have the system down. You'll be waiting in line one minute and the next sitting down looking at your menu and wondering how you got there. Even if you do have to wait a little, believe me, it is well worth the wait! The food is fantastic! Literally everything on the menu is amazing! I typically get an omelet because it comes with 2 sides, with can practically be another meal themselves. One of the side options is pancakes! So there is usually always food left over to take home. The service is great too! They have extra people come around with coffee pots and water to refill your drink so you are never waiting. The prices are very reasonable too! Make sure you bring cash because that's all they take, though there is an ATM machine near the cash register. The Original Waffle Shop is a staple in State College and local favorite! Make sure you try this place out! It's perfect for breakfast before a big PSU football game. The only regret you will have is not coming here!

Even when the lines are long, they seem to move quickly to seat people. They are accommodating for bigger groups of people and don't have a problem with doing separate checks. They are also very willing to customize your order- but be aware that they will charge you for certain changes (which they don't tell you when you're ordering.) For example, I ordered an omelet and asked to substitute for egg whites and was charged 50 cents. But they did take off for things that I asked them to hold- like no cheese (which most restaurants will charge even if you don't get it). This is a favorite for my family. We live here and my husband and I have a regular Saturday morning date at The Waffle Shop. This is one if the cleanest restaurants, with the best breakfasts I have ever had. There is often a line, but it moves quickly so opt to wait, it is well worth it. PS They also serve a great lunch.

edit: my experience is similar to Brian B's below. I agree with most of what he said, except that I will add that there are better options in town. I will point to the Corner Room and the Autoport (S. Atherthon). Even, I hate to admit it, to Denny's. Waffle Shop. It's cheap, and it's crowded. The breakfast itself is uninspired, with the exception of the potatoes which I liked. There isn't anything I've tried there that I don't feel like I could cook at home in 5-10 minutes and get a better result. Other than that, their coffee is abysmal. The wait staff act like you are torturing them when you ask for skim milk. And you pretty much always have to wait 15 minutes to get your check.

This place is always packed, yet runs like a well-oiled machine! Don't let a long line scare you away, I have always been seated relatively quickly regardless of how long the line was. The service is always quick and friendly. I've gone for breakfast and lunch and both were delicious. Despite the name, I've never tried their Waffles, but I can say their omelette's and lunch sandwiches are both great and with large portions. They are reasonably priced, and they have some breakfast specials that are very cheap. It's a great place to go with family and friends for brunch!

I have now learned after travelling a bit in the south and on the east coast, what a popular establishment "waffle shops" or "waffle houses" are in America. And now after trying one of them, I see why people keep going back to these common staples... CHEAP FOOD is the reason And BREAKFAST ALL DAY is the other I love breakfast food and I could eat it all day, every day and for prices that the waffle shop has, I could do it pretty cheaply! They have daily combo specials, and special combo options all for around $5 or less each!! Of course they have all of the classic French toast, pancakes, omelets, oatmeal, waffles....and they even have pigs in a blanket made with pancakes and sausages!! I got one of the combos though because it seemed like too good of a deal to pass up! For around $4 I got two eggs, bacon, homefries, and an English muffin! That English muffin for some reason really made me want to start buying English muffins again for myself. It just tasted that good!! My eggs could have been a little better, and they say you should judge a place on their eggs, but they were fine, just needed some salt really. And their homefries were good but in my opinion needed some more onions, since I love those ha. But so cheap, and packed during the lunch hour, so come earlier than that, or come ready to wait for a little bit!!

I've been to two of the Waffle Shops near Penn State and they're virtually identical, in terms of offerings. Delicious, fatty, continental breakfast food, and at a fair price, at that. Always packed to capacity (at least during the special event weekends when I visit), we usually wait in line to be seated. At the College Ave. location, it may take a half hour at least to get seated. I typically order a combination of sausages, bacon, two eggs and pancakes, then slather on Tabasco, ketchup, and syrup. I typically emerge from the Waffle Shop, defeated, full, and satisfied. Worth a stop if you have a hankering for IHOP-style breakfast food.

There is always a line for the Waffle Shop! That line always extend outside, so if it is cold, bundle up! At any time you go, expect to wait at least 15 minutes to actually get in and get seated. As a former PSU student, I have been to the Waffle Shop many times. Now as an alumi, I make a point to stop there for breakfast whenever my friends and I come into town. The food is always outstanding and the service is fast and friendly. There is usually a long line when we arrive, but as other reviewers have said, it moves very quickly and you usually don't end up waiting that long. I have gotten many things on the menu and have never been dissapointed. Definitly a staple of State College and worth checking out if you have never been.

Seriously, when us locals drive by and see all of you fools standing out in line on a football weekend we feel pity for you. Why would you wait 30-60 minutes to get a marginal, greasy spoon breakfast. This is classic diner food, burnt home fries, oily omelets and pancakes/waffles with so much surgery crap on them that you need an insulin shot. There are a bunch of equally marginal places to eat breakfast in town that you don't have to wait forever to eat at and the food is just as good and sometimes much better. The Corner Room, The College Diner are good choices. Or you could look at any of the hotels in town that have a restaurant, they all serve good to excellent food, Harrison's on College Ave comes to mind or even Mad Mex has a decent breakfast.. Long story short don't be a chump and stand in a stupid long line, there are so many other choices. Even better yet do what we do, sit at home have a bloody Mary or a Mimosa and wait till 11am when all of the good places start to open up for lunch, then go out to eat. There are three waffle shops in State College, they are all interchangeable. All are way to crowded. If you must go to one on a football weekend then drive the 15 minutes and go to the one in Bellefonte. Never as crowded.

Check the address and pics: this is for the one on N. Atherton. The Waffle Shop downtown is completely separate from the other two, being under different management, and it's very unfortunate that reviews for it are being lumped together with the ORIGINAL Waffle Shop reviews. The one downtown is disgusting. The other two, however, are much better (take this from a State College native). No, the Waffle Shop is not the best place to have breakfast/brunch in the universe. But it's much better than most other places in State College, and they have a wide variety of breakfast food. The ingredients are fresh and everything is homemade. I am especially a fan of the fresh squeezed orange juice. Nothing is incredibly creative but everything tastes good. I don't find myself craving Waffle Shop, but I can say I've never had something I didn't like at this place, ever. And huge portions for cheap. Major downfall: cash only. Even more major downfall: NO REAL MAPLE SYRUP! Yeah, you heard me, it's like Aunt Jemima or somethng. Gross. BYOMS if you're a syrup snob like me and plan on ordering something sweet, though they do have some fruity syrups that are okay in moderation, as they are also sickeningly sweet. I would give this place a higher rating for nostalgia's sake but really it isn't anything special. However, for brunch, there's not many other choices in this town, and the Waffle Shop, while simple, is always satisfying. Just don't go to the one downtown. Ever.

This is the ONLY Waffle Shop location worth going to. Don't waste your time downtown or in Bellefonte-- it's not the same thing. Cash only is kind of lame, but if you're headed here, it's worth stopping by an ATM of your choosing (but probably not worth the $3 charge for the one inside the Shop). Avoid it on football weekends and after holidays like Halloween-- everyone else will be there, although the lines move surprisingly fast. I've pretty much settled on The Nest Egg as my routine, but if I'm in for a splurge, I'll get a waffle. They are tasty. The home fries are so good! And I love weekday mornings here before class-- it's a good time to catch up on homework and this is one of the few places where it doesn't feel weird to eat alone. And if you ask nicely, the servers will set you up with a coffee to go. Love that. The Waffle Shop is something you have to try at least once in State College, but don't make the mistake of going to any of the others in the area-- the one on North Atherton offers the best food, the best service, and has been by far the cleanest and quickest.

My partner and I frequent the Waffle Ship quite a bit. We love the fact that the food is always consistent. There are no surprises. We've tried almost everything on the menu including the brunch items like the Cobb salad. The food is always good. The blueberry pancakes have real blueberries. The staff is always friendly, especially Tammy. The only downfall is the cash only form of payment. The alternative is getting cash out of the high fee ATM machine. It's not the end of the world, though. Even when the long line is outside and around the building, the wait is usually no longer than 15 minutes.

I've gotten their Belgian waffle, and it's seriously one of the best waffles I've had in a while! Let's mention the elephant in the room before we start: there are no good breakfast places in State College. They simply don't exist. Sadly, the Waffle Shop does little to change that opinion. Nestled next to a boutique and a failing jewelry store, the Waffle Shop displays what most food goers like to see, a small restaurant with a line out the door. The problem with the line is that it's merely a consequence of eating breakfast out. After waiting for nearly 25 minutes, my date and I managed to get a hastily cleaned table with small bits of coffee and syrup still stuck on it. We had a simple order of the corned beef and hash, pancakes with eggs, and greek omelet. For such a simple order, a wait time of over 30 minutes is plain unacceptable. On the other hand the food itself is fair, only edging out the dining commons on-campus by a hair. After eating, I was treated to another line while I waited for to pay, again taking 15 minutes in which I was shoved through several times by other guests and employees. For twenty bucks and change, here's an idea: Flag down a student, give them 7 bucks, and tell them to swipe you in as a guest for the on-campus dining commons. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle.

The Waffle Shop is my absolute favorite east-coast breakfast place. (Hobee's on the west coast is competing for overall favorite breakfast.) I have never tried their lunch food.. I am sure it is good, but their breakfast foods are so delicious I can't bring myself to try lunch. Every time I go I've been torn between eggs or something sweet! Usually I end up making a deal with a friend where we split one of each. For eggs, the Villager Omelet or the Nest Egg are my favorites. The blueberry waffle or banana-nut waffle (or pancake versions) win for sweet food. Also try the fresh squeezed orange juice. This place is highly popular with older locals, high school kids, and large groups. It may look a bit like a Denny's, but the food is faaaar better. There may be a line, especially if you come on the weekend, but you won't find comparable breakfast elsewhere in State College! Opens early. Very early.

Any time anyone is visiting State College, I always tell them to hit the Waffle Shop. I have had food this good in other places (NYC, DC, Tokyo), and food this cheap before (small town diners) but NEVER have I had such unbelievable breakfast food for so cheap. I miss going there every weekend (and yeah, a lot of weekdays). ^_^ Everything is great -- the omelettes, the waffles, the pancakes, the lunch food. I personally love the Mini Platter if you want a complete breakfast (it's got pancakes, eggs, and bacon or sausage) or the waffles of ANY type, or the western omelette (the one with home fries in it). But really, just close your eyes and randomly point at anything on the menu, and you will love it. The reason that there's a line a mile long on football weekends is because it's the best place to get breakfast, brunch, or lunch in SC (but don't worry, the line moves FAST). One thing to note -- this location and the other one on Atherton are owned by a different owner than the one on College (in my opinion, the one on College has slipped since it was bought by someone else), so for the true Waffle Shop, go to the Atherton locations. Another thing to note -- they close at 3, so don't sleep in too long! Finally, they don't accept credit cards, so bring cash (you won't need much) or a check from a local bank.

Out of all the restaurants in State College, I have the biggest gripe with The Waffle Shop. Partially because my friends love this place and I always get dragged here. The only reason this establishment is so busy is because it's pretty much the only breakfast place in town (Denny's does not count). This place always has a long line outside and the food is sub par at best. I have had both savory and sweet here and I don't see anything special. Prices are decent though.

This is the best breakfast you can get. I don't know what it is, but there is something special about this place. I travel from DC just to get some. A restaurant place that does the job well for an omelette or pancake craving, the Waffle Shop North has kind servers and quick (for the early riser--beware the lines!) seating and service. The breakfast food won't break any culinary barriers, but it's made well and has many options for egg/pancake accompaniments. Well-priced, too. I'd happily call this a four-star breakfast standard if they took credit cards; as a decently large chain with three? four? outposts and a steadily large customer base, I see no reason for their cash-only stance. I dislike being forced to pay the $3 premium at restaurant ATMs, and on our first visit here last year, as we didn't know the policy, we had to pony up for it. Otherwise, a consistent and traditional breakfast place, and one of the few in the area that's not a Denny's or an Eat-n-Park.

I spent many a college weekend here for breakfast and was happy that the standards were still the same when I returned last weekend. Yes, depending on when you come the lines can literally extend into the parking lot, but it's a quick turnaround. I have never eaten anything on the lunch portion of the menu, but the breakfast is fantastic. Everyone I've brought here has always enjoyed their meal, whether waffles, french toast, pancakes, or omelettes. You can't go wrong with their Belgian waffle and a side of thick cut bacon or pork sausages. The coffee is always good and the fresh squeezed orange juice can't be beat. I spent $10 on brunch and portions weren't skimpy. My only problem is that they do not take credit cards; once they do I will give it 5 stars. (I never use an ATM in a restaurant.)

Try and try again, we cannot find another Waffle Shop comparison throughout many of the east coast cities. We've been to classic diners, off the highway eateries, recommended breakfast nooks... all to no avail. This is our most highly missed restaurant of PSU days. The quality of food is always fresh, the price can't be beat, and the service is fast. Going on a game day? Prepare to wait in line. Otherwise, there's usually not much if any wait. The place is clean, get a seat next to a window for sunshine. And order your bacon extra crispy- they actually know what that means here! My husband was a waiter here for a short time, and knows all the little things that you can interchange on the menu if you don't want an english muffin, or would rather have a pancake, etc... So don't be afraid to ask, the old timer's that frequent this place do, and substitutions are part of the true bliss of this wonderful breakfast eatery.

My 2 friends wouldn't wake up early to get breakfast so there was a line outside when we got there. But at least that shows the place is good. The wait was too too long though. Our waitress was friendly and nice to talk to about nails. She saw my friend's PennState themed nails and started a conversation about it. My one friend got the Fruit Topped Pancakes and chose Apples as the topping. My other friend got the Mini Platter but still couldn't finish. And I got the Western Omelet. The food was okay.. The omelet was kind of dry at the ends and the pancake was just lacking something.

I've never had a waffle here, but I like the omelettes. An omelette with the two included sides counts as breakfast and lunch, easily. A "breakfast salad" (basically a big fruit parfait) is a good choice for a lighter meal. They keep the coffee full, and they're happy to give you a big coffee to go. Considering the price and the location, I leave quite happy. There's nothing really interesting going on here, but it's extremely reliable and good food. The line moves fast; there's also a counter that moves even faster.

The Waffle Shop is easily the best value for breakfast in the State College area. When you enter, don't worry about seeing a long line during peak breakfast/brunch hours. The operation is very fast and efficient at turning over tables about as fast as a NASCAR pit crew. Despite their namesake waffles, I am partial to the their pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Oh...and their coffee is also delicious. But really, you cannot go wrong ordering from their menu. As a former PSU alum, every time I am back in State College to visit, I make it a point to visit the Waffle Shop for a little taste of heaven.

Blame it on putting my west coast self in the east coast time zone, but I was craving pancakes. In the afternoon. The Original Waffle Shop had just what I needed. Silver Dollar Pancakes to be exact. My dad used to make them for me and I was sure I could finish all 12 of them since they were certain to be small, right? No. I don't think the Original Waffle Shop does anything small. While they were not full-sized, each one was much larger than I expected. Looking across the table at the blueberry pancakes (that were enormous) my afternoon breakfast partner in crime was cheerfully demolishing, I should not have been surprised. Sadly, I could only finish 7. And I really, really tried. Disappointed in my performance, our waitress threatened to tell my mom I didn't finish my breakfast, but then offered to package my unfinished pancakes to go. Do people eat leftover pancakes? I declined, but the offer was appreciated. Starting your day late? Really late? Bring your dead presidents - the OG Waffle Shop is cash only.

I've heard about the Waffle Shop for years, and everyone I asked for State College recommendations suggested stopping there. As lovers of breakfast foods, my husband and I obliged. So I'm actually an omelet fan, but I figured I just had to order waffles from a place called waffle shop. It would probably be sacrilege otherwise, right?? I went with the Banana Nut Waffles and my husband went with the Apple Cinnamon Waffles and we divided up our platters evenly. Both were warm and fresh when they came out, and certainly very delicious. I like that there were different flavors of syrup; strawberry went really well on the banana nut waffles. We both found it very strange that there were little pieces of parsley on each plate. Why would we need parsley with our waffles? I've never seem a sweet breakfast food come with garnish. The portion was large and the price was fair. In any case, the waffles were great. However, I don't really get all the hype. We had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table. The first 5 minutes or so were spent outside in a cold rain. I don't know if the waffles were that good to warrant such a long wait. I've had waffles of similiar quality with fun toppings elsewhere. I do want to note that our waitress was a sweetheart. The place was a zoo, but she was cool, calm and collected the entire time. It turns out she's a Philly local that's attending PSU for school. When we told her we were from Philly, she lit up and chatted briefly. I'm glad I had the Waffle Shop experience to say that I've gone, but I just wasn't blown away.

Went here on a Saturday morning after Penn State graduation. It was packed, but they were able to seat our party of 16 almost immediately. We had to sit in separate booths however, but we agreed to that. The waitress came over promptly and took our drink order. She was pleasant and efficient. I had the Greek Omelet with home fries and pancakes as my sides. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the home fries were real cut up potatoes. They were very good. My only complaint was the Omelet. It was very dense. I like my omelets a bit fluffy and this one didn't make the cut. Also it was a bit bland. I had to add a lot of salt and pepper, and that really didn't help much... Also they only accept cash, which is odd because of a restaurant of this size. It was a huge inconvenience to go get cash and pay a fee for an atm use. Luckily I knew before we got to the restaurant because of someone we were with. It is posted on the door in plain sight that they are cash only, but it's very often that people do not notice something printed on a door. Especially if someone in front of you is holding the door open. Therefore, I feel as though the hostess should inform people of this prior to seating. Nobody mentioned it. They just assumed you knew.

While in town, I was told that I had to try the Original Waffle Shop. I arrived for lunch in this very nice and upscale place (for this type of restaurant), and a line stretched at least 20 people long. I was about to leave, but the very attentive host invited me to stay for a seat at the bar. She knew I had little time, so she generously gave me a booth when one opened so that I could get back to work. The server was really fun and friendly, and my bacon and eggs were cooked perfectly. The home fried potatoes were delicious. I'm glad that I made the restaurant a stop on my trip, and you should too. And by the way, there's more than just breakfast here. P.S. They don't take credit cards. Shame, shame. It's the 21st century. Dear owner, just charge the darn percentage to me that you don't want to pay to MC or Visa. To force me to pull money out of an ATM that charges a fee smells of greediness. Take a card.

While staying in State College, I stopped in at the Original Waffle Shop for a very early morning breakfast during a snow storm. The place was not busy and I was seated immediately. I wanted something light and not too heavy. I ordered an Ice Water (I already had coffee at the hotel) and the Quick Start Special S9 ($2.99-For Kids of ALL AGES!!!) One Chocolate Chip Pancake, One Egg (scrambled), One Strip of Bacon and One Sausage Link, which was served quickly. The portion of food was just right. The chocolate chip pancake was soft and fluffy with lots of chocolate chips in the mix, topped with a cool whip cream & more chocolate chips. The scrambled egg was soft and fluffy too. The thick slice of grilled bacon was firm and chewy. The grilled/browned sausage link was firm. Overall, a solid good breakfast on the cheap (under $4 before tip) with quick friendly service. I endured a long drive back to NH in the snowstorm, but this breakfast got the day off to a good start. CASH ONLY, ATM on site

Make sure you get a side of the homefries- they are absolutely delicious. Megan (and it appeared the other waitresses) were very on top of their game, checking in with all of the tables frequently. I got 4 refills of my coffee, and they were great about refilling the water as well. The line was long when we left, so it appears earlier is better on a Sunday. I highly recommend this place! When in State College, Original Waffle Shop is a great place for breakfast, with one huge downfall: they still don't take credit or debit cards. It's cash only, which makes anyone in town for business cringe. Fortunately, great, friendly, warm service keeps frustration low. The place reminds me of a Denny's, Perkins, Bob Evans, etc set up, but with much better food. Otherwise, they setup and style is nearly identical. Fortunately, the food is a grade - or two - better. The Waffles are cooked to perfect, crispy and pack plenty of flavor. The potatoes taste homemade. The omelets made the grade and even the orange juice tastes fresh. If in town with a family, friends or solo, you won't go wrong with breakfast here. Just make sure someone has cash.

We went on a Sunday morning, last day of spring break and it was relatively calm in there. Got there at 9:10am and no line up.... Until we left around past 10. If you don't want to line up, get there before 10 for sure. Ordered the omelette with side of pancakes and home fries- $8.49. Good price for A LOT of food, enough to take home for another meal! The pancakes were great, but the home fries were a bit of a downer, I expected more. They weren't as crispy as I had hoped. The waffle was great- crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The highlight was the bacon- well cooked, crispy and thick cut. Would return just for the bacon. Coffee was great too. The reason I had to dock off stars is the service. I think our server was relatively new but he was super slow. We waited 20 minutes until he finally came over to take our order. Granted that he was waiting on a big group next to us, but still, come on, you have to at least acknowledge the existence of your other tables and get them drinks while they're waiting. I watched him take away empty plates from another table BEFORE he came to take our order- hello, we've been waiting for 20 minutes and that is your priority? Needs more training. Other servers were not any better- while we were tapping our foot and waiting, we had to actually flag someone down for coffee, many just walked right passed our table. We asked for water and she never came back with it. Manager walked past our table several times and said nothing. A good manager would help out staff that are new, or at least follow up.

Exactly what you would expect from a breakfast place. There was a wait to get in (which usually means it's a good place) that went fairly quick. The decor was cheerful and have windows had live plants and plenty of light coming in. We were seated even though our entire party wasn't there (we appreciated this). She refilled our coffee frequently through our meal The menu has the usual breakfast fare: eggs, pancakes, omelets, etc. The food was very good, portions were big but not overwhelming. Blame it on putting my west coast self in the east coast time zone, but I was craving pancakes. In the afternoon. The Original Waffle Shop had just what I needed. Silver Dollar Pancakes to be exact. My dad used to make them for me and I was sure I could finish all 12 of them since they were certain to be small, right? No. I don't think the Original Waffle Shop does anything small. While they were not full-sized, each one was much larger than I expected. Looking across the table at the blueberry pancakes (that were enormous) my afternoon breakfast partner in crime was cheerfully demolishing, I should not have been surprised. Sadly, I could only finish 7. And I really, really tried. Disappointed in my performance, our waitress threatened to tell my mom I didn't finish my breakfast, but then offered to package my unfinished pancakes to go. Do people eat leftover pancakes? I declined, but the offer was appreciated. Starting your day late? Really late? Bring your dead presidents - the OG Waffle Shop is cash only.

I've heard about the Waffle Shop for years, and everyone I asked for State College recommendations suggested stopping there. As lovers of breakfast foods, my husband and I obliged. So I'm actually an omelet fan, but I figured I just had to order waffles from a place called waffle shop. It would probably be sacrilege otherwise, right?? I went with the Banana Nut Waffles and my husband went with the Apple Cinnamon Waffles and we divided up our platters evenly. Both were warm and fresh when they came out, and certainly very delicious. I like that there were different flavors of syrup; strawberry went really well on the banana nut waffles. We both found it very strange that there were little pieces of parsley on each plate. Why would we need parsley with our waffles? I've never seem a sweet breakfast food come with garnish. The portion was large and the price was fair. In any case, the waffles were great. However, I don't really get all the hype. We had to wait about 20 minutes to get a table. The first 5 minutes or so were spent outside in a cold rain. I don't know if the waffles were that good to warrant such a long wait. I've had waffles of similiar quality with fun toppings elsewhere. I do want to note that our waitress was a sweetheart. The place was a zoo, but she was cool, calm and collected the entire time. It turns out she's a Philly local that's attending PSU for school. When we told her we were from Philly, she lit up and chatted briefly. I'm glad I had the Waffle Shop experience to say that I've gone, but I just wasn't blown away.

Went here on a Saturday morning after Penn State graduation. It was packed, but they were able to seat our party of 16 almost immediately. We had to sit in separate booths however, but we agreed to that. The waitress came over promptly and took our drink order. She was pleasant and efficient. I had the Greek Omelet with home fries and pancakes as my sides. The pancakes were light and fluffy, and the home fries were real cut up potatoes. They were very good. My only complaint was the Omelet. It was very dense. I like my omelets a bit fluffy and this one didn't make the cut. Also it was a bit bland. I had to add a lot of salt and pepper, and that really didn't help much... Also they only accept cash, which is odd because of a restaurant of this size. It was a huge inconvenience to go get cash and pay a fee for an atm use. Luckily I knew before we got to the restaurant because of someone we were with. It is posted on the door in plain sight that they are cash only, but it's very often that people do not notice something printed on a door. Especially if someone in front of you is holding the door open. Therefore, I feel as though the hostess should inform people of this prior to seating. Nobody mentioned it. They just assumed you knew.

While in town, I was told that I had to try the Original Waffle Shop. I arrived for lunch in this very nice and upscale place (for this type of restaurant), and a line stretched at least 20 people long. I was about to leave, but the very attentive host invited me to stay for a seat at the bar. She knew I had little time, so she generously gave me a booth when one opened so that I could get back to work. The server was really fun and friendly, and my bacon and eggs were cooked perfectly. The home fried potatoes were delicious. I'm glad that I made the restaurant a stop on my trip, and you should too. And by the way, there's more than just breakfast here. P.S. They don't take credit cards. Shame, shame. It's the 21st century. Dear owner, just charge the darn percentage to me that you don't want to pay to MC or Visa. To force me to pull money out of an ATM that charges a fee smells of greediness. Take a card.

While staying in State College, I stopped in at the Original Waffle Shop for a very early morning breakfast during a snow storm. The place was not busy and I was seated immediately. I wanted something light and not too heavy. I ordered an Ice Water (I already had coffee at the hotel) and the Quick Start Special S9 ($2.99-For Kids of ALL AGES!!!) One Chocolate Chip Pancake, One Egg (scrambled), One Strip of Bacon and One Sausage Link, which was served quickly. The portion of food was just right. The chocolate chip pancake was soft and fluffy with lots of chocolate chips in the mix, topped with a cool whip cream & more chocolate chips. The scrambled egg was soft and fluffy too. The thick slice of grilled bacon was firm and chewy. The grilled/browned sausage link was firm. Overall, a solid good breakfast on the cheap (under $4 before tip) with quick friendly service. I endured a long drive back to NH in the snowstorm, but this breakfast got the day off to a good start. CASH ONLY, ATM on site

My 2 friends wouldn't wake up early to get breakfast so there was a line outside when we got there. But at least that shows the place is good. The wait was too too long though. Our waitress was friendly and nice to talk to about nails. She saw my friend's PennState themed nails and started a conversation about it. My one friend got the Fruit Topped Pancakes and chose Apples as the topping. My other friend got the Mini Platter but still couldn't finish. And I got the Western Omelet. The food was okay.. The omelet was kind of dry at the ends and the pancake was just lacking something.

A Penn State institution! This place is the perfect breakfast diner for a visit to campus or on a game day. I really enjoyed my simple pecan waffle and the bacon was thick and crispy. There is something about a packed diner that turns over tables quickly. They are efficient and effective...and you can just tell that everyone in the restaurant is having a good time. Waffle Shop...I will return.

Okay, I get that this place is an institution, but I'm over it after rude treatment from a hostess this last time. We were asked how many we had in our party, then told to stand in a certain place, next to the longer line with larger parties. We did. Eventually we realized other parties of the same size, from far behind us in line, were being seated while we were still standing there. So we asked the hostess about this (very politely-it's not our style to be rude or demanding), and were told that we were actually supposed to stand in a different spot, then loop around and follow the line. Husband and I looked at each other- this wasn't what we'd been told, and even if it had been, when the hostess noticed we weren't standing in the right location (she'd walked past us several times, bringing up people from behind us in line to get seated), why not just tell us we were in the wrong place? And she gave us an attitude on top of it. I know the place is busy, but I really just don't need to spend my money if I'm going to get treated rudely and end up waiting forever for a table.

Sometimes you want a hearty breakfast for lunch, right? You can get that here fast, with a smile, and with loads of coffee. ;) My experience: I was just there today (weekday) and ordered the strawberry waffle and a side of scrambled eggs. I chose the glazed strawberries (between fresh or glazed) and requested egg whites for the side. After ordering, my food was on the table within five minutes. Everything was so good, that it's 10:00 PM and I'm still thinking about it. ;) The waffle was the best I've had in town and was smothered in delicious strawberries with whipped cream. Perfection! My server was incredibly nice and super conscientious; she was so attentive, I never had to ask for anything, and my coffee cup was always at least 75% full. More on the food: Other favorite menu items of mine include the pecan waffle, pancakes, oatmeal and the breakfast bowl (big bowl of berries, bananas, granola and yogurt). I really like that they have several different kinds of syrup on the table...that's just fun! If I were to be picky: If I had three wishes, I might change the following: (1) make the French toast from thick slices of challah or brioche, (2) extend their hours so they're open in the evenings (Sometimes I want breakfast for dinner too!), and (3) redecorate. The interior of the diner is somewhat drab, circa 1975; not the hip, chrome-accented designs of those lovely iconic American diners from the '50s. No juke boxes here, but plenty of wholesome dishes and fast and friendly service that will make everyone happy. Bonus wish: free-range eggs and at least some organic options for the so-called "dirty dozen." Anyhow, throw on your favorite baseball hat, or your hair up into half-pony, go relaxed, and tuck into some serious comfort food. I'm thinking about going back with the family this weekend. It's a great place for the kids with the large booths, paper place mats that double as coloring books, extensive menu, and diner environment (no one is there to pop the question, hiding the ring in the OJ, so your kids can be kids). 5 stars because I think it's the best in State College. (I no longer compare restaurants here to those in cities.) Come here for the comfort food and the excellent (i.e fast and friendly) service. You won't be disappointed! :) PS...They have a huge parking lot, so parking is a breeze. There is an ATM machine next to the cash resister, which helps with the less-than-ideal cash-only policy.

The Food: (Excellent) This is a landmark location in State College, PA, and the food says it all! The Original Waffle Shop is a champion of pancake and waffle platters, offers a great variety of syrups, and even goes outside of its specialty (i.e. waffles) to make some other extraordinary dishes (get the hash.....seriously). If you want to get your grub on for breakfast time, this is a top contender for the state of Pennsylvania! The Atmosphere: (Above Average) The Original Waffle Shop is essentially a glorified diner without any noticeable flaws. Seriously, the restaurant is mostly lit by natural sunlight with several more intimate areas, the carpeting and upholstery is very clean, and the noise level is just right. Even more importantly, you are surrounded by media that will leave you anticipating your meal! The walls have a variety of high-res images of the food served, and you can watch how your food is made while waiting for a seat via instructional videos. The Price: (Above Average) You can probably expect to pay approximately $10 - 20 per person. However, as the question is whether the price justifies the product and the answer is: CERTAINLY! If my family was visiting or I just a serious urge for proper breakfast food, I would take them here and proudly pay the price. The Service: (Excellent) One of the few places that I have ever been to where every employee seems genuinely motivated and focused on your experience. Our waitress was upbeat and witty, bus boy was a local high school student who held a conversation when prompted, and the even though the line was out the door, a efficient seating staff had us seated within 15 minutes.

The food is great (particularly love the pecan waffles), but you couldn't pay me to go there past 10 a.m. on virtually any weekend since it gets way too crowded. I will say they do a remarkable job turning tables over, though, so even those scary looking lines move pretty quickly. One small beef...lack of credit cards is really a headache. I wish they'd change that.

Summary: A Penn State institution with a deservingly loyal fan base. Positive: 1) Traditional menu. 2) Friendly waiting staff. 3) Food is a perfect 10. 4) Prices are average to slightly less. 5) Portions are average to slightly more. Negative: 1) The line (depending on when you visit). 2) Seating feels slightly cramped. 2) They do NOT accept credit cards. The key to being immediately seated at the Original Waffle Shop is to arrive early. Depending on the location, season and event being held on campus, you will be rewarded with quick seating by the hostess. If you are one of the unfortunate many that miss this window, you will be subjugated to standing in line, which depending on if it is "game day", can extend out the doors and wrap halfway around the building. A result of their loyal customers, these lines are about as famous as their chocolate chip waffles. With lines that look similar to a cold war era Russian bread line, you know the food has got to be good. You don't earn the loyalty of patrons by not making good food. This location contains a large primary dining room, and one smaller dining area to the side. The dining area is carpeted, seating is "restaurant quality" (designed to be uncomfortable enough to prevent patrons from overstaying). Although the main dining area is large, there is a slight cramped feeling between seats. Artwork and plants are interspersed throughout. Although they are a chain, there is definitely a diner vibe here, something missing from modern "cookie-cutter" corporate owned restaurants. Food is reasonably priced. At times, items are lower than expected. Nothing is shockingly high, except for perhaps the Steak and Eggs but compared to other restaurants, this would be about average. The waiting staff is friendly, but busy. Sympathy is easily developed for them when you realize what they must go through on a Sunday at 11am. Menu selection is pretty traditional breakfast and lunch themed. Nothing odd or experimental being offered. The wait after your order is placed is average. Our last visit was 12 minutes between ordering and receiving. Quality of food is a perfect 10. I assume this is a result of following the mantra of "do things simply, do them well". Portions are between average and more than average, depending on what you order. No price shock when the check is received. The only thing I have a problem with is the Original Waffle Shop does not accept credit cards. There is though an ATM machine located near the register. I have not used it, so cannot say anything about the fee. As dependent as I am on paying with plastic, this is not a weekly (or monthly) visit for me. But judging by the length of the lines, I'm sure I won't be missed. Say to any out of state Penn State Alumni the words "Waffle Shop" and there will usually be a resulting smile, followed by a story of many visits (often times while hung over). The story usually ends with either "oh, I miss that place" or "when I'm there for the game, I usually stop by". Very few places have the privilege of that kind of loyalty.

Lines out the door for breakfast foods? Yes! Worth the wait, No! I get it, it is a Penn State tradition, a local business that everyone goes to as part of the State College experience. And then they go back to recall those experiences. And they take their friends and relatives there when they visit from out of town. The food is o.k. the standard basic breakfasts (and a few sandwiches and salads) done well enough to eat, but nothing exceptional. Not a bargain either, IMO overpriced for quality. If all you want is calories skip the lines and drink corn syrup. It is a major ingredient here. The service was bad. I fail to appreciate why having the customers pass down the flatware, and then pass the drinks and then pass the place-mats to their fellow table-mates is anything but annoying and lazy on the part of staff. And the delivery of drinking straws by tossing them in the air to see where they land on the table (or in the drinks, or on the patrons) is not cute or entertaining, but is asinine. NOTE the do not accept any form of payment but cash, there is an ATM inside. This place invites an tax audit, a health inspection, and customer service training overhaul - but hey, it is a tradition. The lines are still out the door!

Does this deserve a 5? yes!!! Did i care the line was out the door? NO! WHY??!! Because when we finally sat down our kind waitress took great care of us. We got our food in 10 minutes (or less, possibly less) and it was incredible! I am not a big breakfast eater. But damn that was some waffle. And they talk about their 'world famous' home fries. They were not lieing, the homefries were fantastic. We usually go to Denny's when we come to State College, but never again. We will never go anywhere else but this place!

This is always a fantastic place to eat! Always great service!! Their omelettes are HUGE, and the Banana Nut Waffle is the best I've ever had. There are 2 reasons it does not get 5 stars 1) The hours: if you are a working person, you will rarely get to eat here because they close at 3 PM. 2) They do not take Debit/Credit cards. It's cash only. They DO have an ATM on site, but it's an extra 3$ fee to use. So if you want to eat here, get here early, and bring cash.

I had two eggs, they're pancakes and five sausage, worth a side of four bacon. Great stuff. But there was a surprise... My bottom cakes had pecans in it. Obviously an error. I didn't complain cause I liked it but somebody was obviously slacking in the kitchen. It's all cool tho.

My belgian waffle was a smidge too crispy but very good. The bacon was real bacon, not the thin, sad, anemic strips you might expect from a diner. The home fries are thinly sliced seasoned red potatoes rather than the frozen pour-out-of-a-bag kind. The coffee was really good and the server used her spidey-sense to detect when it was about a third full and topped it off quickly. Amazing. The line when we got there (at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon) was really long for parties of four, but you can skip the line if there are enough seats at the counter. My kids are happier at barstools than at tables, but I would only recommend this if they are relatively well-behaved because it seemed the counter was the favored spot for solo professor-types who want to sit away from the crowds and read the paper. Several weeks ago I had the Florentine Benedict which was made with spinach and tomatoes instead of the canadian bacon and I really enjoyed it and was hoping that they would add it to the menu. Well I found out that they have added the standard egg benedict and the florentine benedict even though they are not listed in the menu yet but are listed below the specials board. For $7.99 the dish comes with home fried potatoes and are very delicious.

The Original Waffle Shop is more aptly named The Original Anti-Atkins Shop. Your glycemic index will max out here, followed soon thereafter by an epic insulin crash. You will be left in a zombie-like trance, shuffling, drooling, unable to think or speak clearly, muttering things like "that was so worth the calories" and "brains...." as you cause nervousness in those around you. The pancakes and waffles here are a major score, and the bacon, egg, and cheese omlette is worth the statistical shortening of your life. The only real negative is the 40min wait to get in, queued up like cattle waiting to be slaughtered. It might be better during the week, but on weekends you will basically need a pre-breakfast to hold you over as you await the main event. However, that strange feeling from inside is your pancreas telling you not to go.

My husband is a huge waffle fan and pronounced these to be "righteous," so you can trust him. We sampled the regular Belgian and the pecan waffles, plus some bacon and a bowl of fruit. Everything was really good, and the sole element I found wanting was the lack of real maple syrup. I'd happily pay extra for it if it were offered. Service was quick and friendly. We went on a Sunday morning and had a short wait; even when the line is long, they turn tables fast. Oh yeah, cash only, too, but they have an ATM on site if you're lacking.

This is probably the most popular staple in State College and it gets talked up endlessly by alumni and students. I think the food here is definitely good, I can't really think of a much better place to get breakfast in the area. The problem is that it's a mecca for alumni and can be giant pain on the weekends. If the wait is out the door, I just come back another time. I usually go during the week - the specials are excellent and very cheap, and there's rarely a wait. To give an idea of price, during the week you can get the specials for between $3-5, during the weekend the meals are usually $5-9. The food is pretty standard - pancakes, bacon, potatoes, eggs - but they do standard breakfast really well. Cash only, ATM (with fees) on location, beware of going between 9-12 on weekends and forget about football weekends. Unless you're prepared to wait in a line that goes out the door and around the corner. As a couple other people pointed out, this is for the N. Atherton location, not the downtown one. Downtown is not run by the same people and is different (in a bad way). N. Atherton and Blue Course Dr. are the ones worth visiting - believe the townies, we know our waffle shops.

I've heard so much about this so called Waffle Shop. Now, I've had my fair share of waffles in my time, and nothing really made me think "WOW this is one damn good waffle." Waffle shop, on the other hand, is actually a spot that I'd consistently come back to. What makes these waffles so great? Well, the waffles of course! The spot itself is right on North Atherton. There's a decently sized parking lot in the back, but do make sure to get here early. The line does get pretty long, and it does have limited hours. Plus, it's cash only so make sure to stop by that ATM beforehand. This place has a good homey feel to it, without all that corporate cooke cutter diner look to it. The servers here are nice, and very attentive to your needs. As far as the food goes, there is quite the variety. In addition to waffles and pancakes, there are sandwiches and normal entrees, but c'mon. You and I both know that you're coming here for the waffles. I wasn't particular hungry this day, so I opted for the regular pancakes, egg, and sausage. The pancake was pretty awesome even though it wasn't infused with blueberries or chocolate chips. There was a very nice fluff to the pancake, and a nice hint of that buttery taste. I checked out the chocolate and blueberry ones and they actually do include whole blueberries and chocolate chips in their pancakes. None of that fake stuff here. Waffle Shop will treat you right. Now I know for a fact that I'll be back here again to try out the other flavors. Do yourself a favor and try this spot out.

If you're in State College just for a visit, you MUST stop in here. Don't be turned away by the long line you see waiting to get in, they have the system down. You'll be waiting in line one minute and the next sitting down looking at your menu and wondering how you got there. Even if you do have to wait a little, believe me, it is well worth the wait! The food is fantastic! Literally everything on the menu is amazing! I typically get an omelet because it comes with 2 sides, with can practically be another meal themselves. One of the side options is pancakes! So there is usually always food left over to take home. The service is great too! They have extra people come around with coffee pots and water to refill your drink so you are never waiting. The prices are very reasonable too! Make sure you bring cash because that's all they take, though there is an ATM machine near the cash register. The Original Waffle Shop is a staple in State College and local favorite! Make sure you try this place out! It's perfect for breakfast before a big PSU football game. The only regret you will have is not coming here!

The Waffle Shop is easily the best value for breakfast in the State College area. When you enter, don't worry about seeing a long line during peak breakfast/brunch hours. The operation is very fast and efficient at turning over tables about as fast as a NASCAR pit crew. Despite their namesake waffles, I am partial to the their pancakes, eggs, and bacon. Oh...and their coffee is also delicious. But really, you cannot go wrong ordering from their menu. As a former PSU alum, every time I am back in State College to visit, I make it a point to visit the Waffle Shop for a little taste of heaven.

Even when the lines are long, they seem to move quickly to seat people. They are accommodating for bigger groups of people and don't have a problem with doing separate checks. They are also very willing to customize your order- but be aware that they will charge you for certain changes (which they don't tell you when you're ordering.) For example, I ordered an omelet and asked to substitute for egg whites and was charged 50 cents. But they did take off for things that I asked them to hold- like no cheese (which most restaurants will charge even if you don't get it). I will point to the Corner Room and the Autoport (S. Atherthon). Even, I hate to admit it, to Denny's. Waffle Shop. It's cheap, and it's crowded. The breakfast itself is uninspired, with the exception of the potatoes which I liked. There isn't anything I've tried there that I don't feel like I could cook at home in 5-10 minutes and get a better result. Other than that, their coffee is abysmal. The wait staff act like you are torturing them when you ask for skim milk. And you pretty much always have to wait 15 minutes to get your check.

I have now learned after travelling a bit in the south and on the east coast, what a popular establishment "waffle shops" or "waffle houses" are in America. And now after trying one of them, I see why people keep going back to these common staples... CHEAP FOOD is the reason And BREAKFAST ALL DAY is the other I love breakfast food and I could eat it all day, every day and for prices that the waffle shop has, I could do it pretty cheaply! They have daily combo specials, and special combo options all for around $5 or less each!! Of course they have all of the classic French toast, pancakes, omelets, oatmeal, waffles....and they even have pigs in a blanket made with pancakes and sausages!! I got one of the combos though because it seemed like too good of a deal to pass up! For around $4 I got two eggs, bacon, homefries, and an English muffin! That English muffin for some reason really made me want to start buying English muffins again for myself. It just tasted that good!! My eggs could have been a little better, and they say you should judge a place on their eggs, but they were fine, just needed some salt really. And their homefries were good but in my opinion needed some more onions, since I love those ha. But so cheap, and packed during the lunch hour, so come earlier than that, or come ready to wait for a little bit!!

I've been to two of the Waffle Shops near Penn State and they're virtually identical, in terms of offerings. Delicious, fatty, continental breakfast food, and at a fair price, at that. Always packed to capacity (at least during the special event weekends when I visit), we usually wait in line to be seated. At the College Ave. location, it may take a half hour at least to get seated. I typically order a combination of sausages, bacon, two eggs and pancakes, then slather on Tabasco, ketchup, and syrup. I typically emerge from the Waffle Shop, defeated, full, and satisfied. Worth a stop if you have a hankering for IHOP-style breakfast food.

As a former PSU student, I have been to the Waffle Shop many times. Now as an alumi, I make a point to stop there for breakfast whenever my friends and I come into town. The food is always outstanding and the service is fast and friendly. There is usually a long line when we arrive, but as other reviewers have said, it moves very quickly and you usually don't end up waiting that long. I have gotten many things on the menu and have never been dissapointed. Definitly a staple of State College and worth checking out if you have never been.

Seriously, when us locals drive by and see all of you fools standing out in line on a football weekend we feel pity for you. Why would you wait 30-60 minutes to get a marginal, greasy spoon breakfast. This is classic diner food, burnt home fries, oily omelets and pancakes/waffles with so much surgery crap on them that you need an insulin shot. There are a bunch of equally marginal places to eat breakfast in town that you don't have to wait forever to eat at and the food is just as good and sometimes much better. The Corner Room, The College Diner are good choices. Or you could look at any of the hotels in town that have a restaurant, they all serve good to excellent food, Harrison's on College Ave comes to mind or even Mad Mex has a decent breakfast.. Long story short don't be a chump and stand in a stupid long line, there are so many other choices. Even better yet do what we do, sit at home have a bloody Mary or a Mimosa and wait till 11am when all of the good places start to open up for lunch, then go out to eat. There are three waffle shops in State College, they are all interchangeable. All are way to crowded. If you must go to one on a football weekend then drive the 15 minutes and go to the one in Bellefonte. Never as crowded.

Check the address and pics: this is for the one on N. Atherton. The Waffle Shop downtown is completely separate from the other two, being under different management, and it's very unfortunate that reviews for it are being lumped together with the ORIGINAL Waffle Shop reviews. The one downtown is disgusting. The other two, however, are much better (take this from a State College native). No, the Waffle Shop is not the best place to have breakfast/brunch in the universe. But it's much better than most other places in State College, and they have a wide variety of breakfast food. The ingredients are fresh and everything is homemade. I am especially a fan of the fresh squeezed orange juice. Nothing is incredibly creative but everything tastes good. I don't find myself craving Waffle Shop, but I can say I've never had something I didn't like at this place, ever. And huge portions for cheap. Major downfall: cash only. Even more major downfall: NO REAL MAPLE SYRUP! Yeah, you heard me, it's like Aunt Jemima or somethng. Gross. BYOMS if you're a syrup snob like me and plan on ordering something sweet, though they do have some fruity syrups that are okay in moderation, as they are also sickeningly sweet. I would give this place a higher rating for nostalgia's sake but really it isn't anything special. However, for brunch, there's not many other choices in this town, and the Waffle Shop, while simple, is always satisfying. Just don't go to the one downtown. Ever.

This is the ONLY Waffle Shop location worth going to. Don't waste your time downtown or in Bellefonte-- it's not the same thing. Cash only is kind of lame, but if you're headed here, it's worth stopping by an ATM of your choosing (but probably not worth the $3 charge for the one inside the Shop). Avoid it on football weekends and after holidays like Halloween-- everyone else will be there, although the lines move surprisingly fast. I've pretty much settled on The Nest Egg as my routine, but if I'm in for a splurge, I'll get a waffle. They are tasty. The home fries are so good! And I love weekday mornings here before class-- it's a good time to catch up on homework and this is one of the few places where it doesn't feel weird to eat alone. And if you ask nicely, the servers will set you up with a coffee to go. Love that. The Waffle Shop is something you have to try at least once in State College, but don't make the mistake of going to any of the others in the area-- the one on North Atherton offers the best food, the best service, and has been by far the cleanest and quickest.

My partner and I frequent the Waffle Ship quite a bit. We love the fact that the food is always consistent. There are no surprises. We've tried almost everything on the menu including the brunch items like the Cobb salad. The food is always good. The blueberry pancakes have real blueberries. The staff is always friendly, especially Tammy. The only downfall is the cash only form of payment. The alternative is getting cash out of the high fee ATM machine. It's not the end of the world, though. Even when the long line is outside and around the building, the wait is usually no longer than 15 minutes.

It usually gets crowded here on the weekends but it's definitely understandable. As cliche as it sounds, you have to get their waffles here. I've gotten their Belgian waffle, and it's seriously one of the best waffles I've had in a while! This place is always packed, yet runs like a well-oiled machine! Don't let a long line scare you away, I have always been seated relatively quickly regardless of how long the line was. The service is always quick and friendly. I've gone for breakfast and lunch and both were delicious. Despite the name, I've never tried their Waffles, but I can say their omelette's and lunch sandwiches are both great and with large portions. They are reasonably priced, and they have some breakfast specials that are very cheap. It's a great place to go with family and friends for brunch!

Let's mention the elephant in the room before we start: there are no good breakfast places in State College. They simply don't exist. Sadly, the Waffle Shop does little to change that opinion. Nestled next to a boutique and a failing jewelry store, the Waffle Shop displays what most food goers like to see, a small restaurant with a line out the door. The problem with the line is that it's merely a consequence of eating breakfast out. After waiting for nearly 25 minutes, my date and I managed to get a hastily cleaned table with small bits of coffee and syrup still stuck on it. We had a simple order of the corned beef and hash, pancakes with eggs, and greek omelet. For such a simple order, a wait time of over 30 minutes is plain unacceptable. On the other hand the food itself is fair, only edging out the dining commons on-campus by a hair. After eating, I was treated to another line while I waited for to pay, again taking 15 minutes in which I was shoved through several times by other guests and employees. For twenty bucks and change, here's an idea: Flag down a student, give them 7 bucks, and tell them to swipe you in as a guest for the on-campus dining commons. You'll save yourself a lot of hassle.

The Waffle Shop is my absolute favorite east-coast breakfast place. (Hobee's on the west coast is competing for overall favorite breakfast.) I have never tried their lunch food.. I am sure it is good, but their breakfast foods are so delicious I can't bring myself to try lunch. Every time I go I've been torn between eggs or something sweet! Usually I end up making a deal with a friend where we split one of each. For eggs, the Villager Omelet or the Nest Egg are my favorites. The blueberry waffle or banana-nut waffle (or pancake versions) win for sweet food. Also try the fresh squeezed orange juice. This place is highly popular with older locals, high school kids, and large groups. It may look a bit like a Denny's, but the food is faaaar better. There may be a line, especially if you come on the weekend, but you won't find comparable breakfast elsewhere in State College! Opens early. Very early.

I wouldn't recommend it with the strawberry because the fruit and whip cream actually downgrade the waffle. The plain waffle is just that good. Any time anyone is visiting State College, I always tell them to hit the Waffle Shop. I have had food this good in other places (NYC, DC, Tokyo), and food this cheap before (small town diners) but NEVER have I had such unbelievable breakfast food for so cheap. I miss going there every weekend (and yeah, a lot of weekdays). ^_^ Everything is great -- the omelettes, the waffles, the pancakes, the lunch food. I personally love the Mini Platter if you want a complete breakfast (it's got pancakes, eggs, and bacon or sausage) or the waffles of ANY type, or the western omelette (the one with home fries in it). But really, just close your eyes and randomly point at anything on the menu, and you will love it. The reason that there's a line a mile long on football weekends is because it's the best place to get breakfast, brunch, or lunch in SC (but don't worry, the line moves FAST). One thing to note -- this location and the other one on Atherton are owned by a different owner than the one on College (in my opinion, the one on College has slipped since it was bought by someone else), so for the true Waffle Shop, go to the Atherton locations. Another thing to note -- they close at 3, so don't sleep in too long! Finally, they don't accept credit cards, so bring cash (you won't need much) or a check from a local bank.

Can I have 100 pancakes to go please? What can I say... We don't get these kind of pancakes down in Texas! The texture, flavor, color, sides... all perfect. I'll definitely be returning here the next time I'm in State College.

Out of all the restaurants in State College, I have the biggest gripe with The Waffle Shop. Partially because my friends love this place and I always get dragged here. The only reason this establishment is so busy is because it's pretty much the only breakfast place in town (Denny's does not count). This place always has a long line outside and the food is sub par at best. I have had both savory and sweet here and I don't see anything special. Prices are decent though.

Hands down the best place to eat breakfast in State College. I LOVE their chocolate chip pancakes (yum!). Service is fast, prices are cheap, and the food is tasty (even their lunch food is good!). The only downside is that they are usually really busy on weekends, so be prepared to wait in line (though the line does move pretty fast since the service is fast). But don't even try on football weekends - you'll be waiting forever.

This is the best breakfast you can get. I don't know what it is, but there is something special about this place. I travel from DC just to get some. The only downsides are that it is cash only (with a generic ATM by the register that charges a fee), and that the line tends to be long at times (out the door on football weekends). Still, 5 stars. I get it every time I visit. I've never had a meal there that I was disappointed - with quality, service, or price.

A restaurant place that does the job well for an omelette or pancake craving, the Waffle Shop North has kind servers and quick (for the early riser--beware the lines!) seating and service. The breakfast food won't break any culinary barriers, but it's made well and has many options for egg/pancake accompaniments. Well-priced, too. I'd happily call this a four-star breakfast standard if they took credit cards; as a decently large chain with three? four? outposts and a steadily large customer base, I see no reason for their cash-only stance. I dislike being forced to pay the $3 premium at restaurant ATMs, and on our first visit here last year, as we didn't know the policy, we had to pony up for it. Otherwise, a consistent and traditional breakfast place, and one of the few in the area that's not a Denny's or an Eat-n-Park.

A Penn State Classic I prefer W. College, the line moves quick and the service is great. Hard to choose off the huge menu, be careful not to let your eyes over load your stomach or you will fall victim to the waffle shop coma. Breakfast Salad highly recommended!

gray breakfast, great prices, great service. It just doesn't have any charcter. Give me a diner with their grease and memoriabelia on the walls any day. we tried to go to the Diner but they were way backed up. Nice to have this a a fallback plan.

Waffle Shop is running a pretty good business-- when we got there this morning, the line was out the door, but it only took us around 10 minutes to get in. Our waitress was attentive despite the chaos, prompt with coffee refills. My banana nut waffle was delicious, and there was never any pressure to eat faster/turn over the table. I'll definitely be going back!

I spent many a college weekend here for breakfast and was happy that the standards were still the same when I returned last weekend. Yes, depending on when you come the lines can literally extend into the parking lot, but it's a quick turnaround. I have never eaten anything on the lunch portion of the menu, but the breakfast is fantastic. Everyone I've brought here has always enjoyed their meal, whether waffles, french toast, pancakes, or omelettes. You can't go wrong with their Belgian waffle and a side of thick cut bacon or pork sausages. The coffee is always good and the fresh squeezed orange juice can't be beat. I spent $10 on brunch and portions weren't skimpy. My only problem is that they do not take credit cards; once they do I will give it 5 stars. (I never use an ATM in a restaurant.)

I like the Waffle Shop.. but like many others have said, there just aren't any other places around that do a good breakfast. Expect your normal truck stop and small diner/restaurant breakfast menu options. Nothing special, but still good and you can't beat the price.

Try and try again, we cannot find another Waffle Shop comparison throughout many of the east coast cities. We've been to classic diners, off the highway eateries, recommended breakfast nooks... all to no avail. This is our most highly missed restaurant of PSU days. The quality of food is always fresh, the price can't be beat, and the service is fast. Going on a game day? Prepare to wait in line. Otherwise, there's usually not much if any wait. The place is clean, get a seat next to a window for sunshine. And order your bacon extra crispy- they actually know what that means here! My husband was a waiter here for a short time, and knows all the little things that you can interchange on the menu if you don't want an english muffin, or would rather have a pancake, etc... So don't be afraid to ask, the old timer's that frequent this place do, and substitutions are part of the true bliss of this wonderful breakfast eatery.

I've never had a waffle here, but I like the omelettes. An omelette with the two included sides counts as breakfast and lunch, easily. A "breakfast salad" (basically a big fruit parfait) is a good choice for a lighter meal. They keep the coffee full, and they're happy to give you a big coffee to go. Considering the price and the location, I leave quite happy. There's nothing really interesting going on here, but it's extremely reliable and good food. The line moves fast; there's also a counter that moves even faster.

After unloading a car and walking all the kids stuff up 4 flights of stairs we needed some hardy food and found it at the OWS. Very good waffles and really good bacon cooked perfectly. What else can you ask for? CASH Only!
